Haenertsburg

A small mountain village in the Magoebaskloof forests.

History

Haenertsburg grew out of a gold rush after the German prospector Carl Ferdinand Haenert found gold here in 1886, and the township was proclaimed on 13 September 1887. The diggers soon moved on, but the village has links to the Makgoba War of the 1890s and the Anglo-Boer War, when one of the Boers' Long Tom guns was destroyed near the village in 1901. Today forestry and tourism are the main local industries.

Getting there

Haenertsburg lies on the R71, about 51-60 km east of Polokwane and about 34 km south-west of Tzaneen via the Magoebaskloof Pass (the R528 through George's Valley is an alternative route to Tzaneen). From Johannesburg it is roughly 350 km, a little over three hours' drive, via the N1 north to Polokwane and then the R71.

Weather & climate

The village sits at about 1,400-1,800 m above sea level and has a subtropical highland climate with frequent mist. Summers (October-March) are mild and wet with highs of about 24-27 C and afternoon thunderstorms; winters (May-August) are dry with highs of about 20-23 C, cold nights and occasional frost.
