Steelpoort

Steelpoort is a small mining town in the Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality (Sekhukhune District) on the Limpopo–Mpumalanga border. It sits on the R555 in the Steelpoort River valley and serves the surrounding chrome, platinum and ferrochrome operations of the eastern Bushveld Complex.

History

The name is said to date from the late 1800s or early 1900s, when a hunter named Scholtz, travelling with Voortrekkers under Frans Joubert, shot an elephant at dusk and found its tusks stolen ('gesteel') the next morning; the river through the poort became the Steelpoort River. A railway line between Steelpoort and Lydenburg opened in 1924, and chrome and magnetite mining, later joined by platinum mines such as Two Rivers, Modikwa, Mototolo and Marula, drove the town's growth.
