Graskop

Panorama Route town close to God's Window and Bourke's Luck Potholes.

History

The farm belonged to Abel Erasmus in the 1850s-70s and became a mining camp after the Mac Mac gold finds. Percy Fitzpatrick camped nearby (Paradise Camp) in the 1880s, as described in Jock of the Bushveld. The railway from Nelspruit via Sabie opened on 18 June 1914 to serve Pilgrim's Rest, and Graskop was proclaimed a town that year. The name means 'grassy peak'.

Getting there

On the R532/R533 junction: 28 km north of Sabie, about 14-23 km south-east of Pilgrim's Rest via the R533, and connected to Hazyview and Bushbuckridge via Kowyn's Pass (R533/R535). Phabeni Gate of the Kruger Park is about 55 km away.

Weather & climate

Summer-rainfall highland climate; cool, misty days are common because of the altitude, with warm summers and cold winter nights.
