Marble Hall
Marble Hall is a small agricultural town on the N11 in southern Limpopo, in Sekhukhune District. It is the seat of Ephraim Mogale Local Municipality. Irrigated farms in the area grow wheat, cotton and citrus, and the town is surrounded by game farms. Flag Boshielo Dam and the Schuinsdraai Nature Reserve lie close by.
History
Marble was found in the area around 1920. The Marble Lime Company began working the deposits in 1929, and about fifteen varieties of marble occur there. A town was laid out in 1942 under the name Marmerhol ('marble hole'), soon changed to Marble Hall, and it was proclaimed a township in January 1945. The area was formerly part of Mpumalanga. The municipality, called Greater Marble Hall until 2010, is now named after freedom fighter Ephraim Phumuga Mogale.
