Burgersfort
Burgersfort is a fast-growing mining and commercial town in the Spekboom River valley, near the Mpumalanga border, in Sekhukhune District, Limpopo. It sits at the edge of the platinum-rich Bushveld Complex on the Dilokong platinum corridor. It is the seat of Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality and serves nearby areas such as Praktiseer, Aloe Ridge and Mooifontein. Tubatse Crossing and the Thaba Moshate casino resort are its main draws.
History
The town grew around a hexagonal fort built in 1876-77 during the ZAR's war against the Bapedi of King Sekhukhune. It was named after Thomas François Burgers, president of the South African Republic (ZAR). The 1879 British assault on Sekhukhune's stronghold took place in the surrounding region. From the 2000s, platinum and chrome mining turned the small farming town into a regional hub.
