Groblersdal
Groblersdal is a farming town in the Olifants River valley in southern Limpopo, a short drive north of Loskop Dam. It is the seat of Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality in Sekhukhune District. It is described as South Africa's second-largest irrigation settlement, producing citrus, table grapes, cotton, wheat, maize, vegetables, peanuts and lucerne, and serves as the shopping hub for the surrounding farms and villages.
History
The town was laid out on the farm Klipbank and named after its original owner, W.J. Grobler. It grew around the Loskop Dam irrigation scheme after the dam on the Olifants River was completed in 1939. The municipality, formerly Greater Groblersdal, is now named after anti-apartheid activist Elias Motsoaledi.
