Mankweng
Mankweng (also called Turfloop) is a fast-growing university township about 27 km east of Polokwane on the R71 towards Tzaneen. It is home to the University of Limpopo's main campus and Mankweng Hospital, and Paledi Mall is the shopping hub for surrounding villages and for pilgrims bound for the ZCC grounds at Moria a few kilometres east.
History
Mankweng developed in the 1960s around the University College of the North (Turfloop), set up by the apartheid government under segregated higher education. The campus became a hotbed of student and Black Consciousness activism; ANC Youth League leader Peter Mokaba called Mankweng home. In 2005 the University of the North merged with MEDUNSA to form the University of Limpopo. Today many residents near campus let rooms to students.
