Zebediela

Zebediela (locally 'ZB' or Dinamuneng, 'place of oranges') is a cluster of rural villages in the Lepelle-Nkumpi Local Municipality, Capricorn District, south-east of Polokwane next to Lebowakgomo. It is best known for the Zebediela Citrus Estate, once one of the largest citrus farms in the Southern Hemisphere.

History

The proper name is Sebetiela, after a former Ndebele chief; a spelling error produced 'Zebediela'. The Zebediela Citrus Estate was founded in 1917 and grew to about 13,600 hectares, exporting much of its fruit. It was restored to the Bjatladi Communal Property Association in 2003 under land restitution, then declined through mismanagement; in 2026 a revival plan with WIPHOLD as strategic partner was under way, with orchards being assessed and replanted.

Getting there

Zebediela lies south-east of Polokwane, adjoining Lebowakgomo; Magatle village (Zebediela Hospital) is about 76 km south of Polokwane and about 67 km south-east of Mokopane.
