Jane Furse

Jane Furse is the main town and administrative seat of Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality in Sekhukhune District, Limpopo. It is a busy service centre for villages such as Ga-Moretsele, Madibong, Marulaneng, Mamone, Mokwete and Riverside. The Jane Furse Plaza and Jane Furse Crossing shopping centres sit at the main four-way intersection, and the regional hospital and many schools are here.

History

The town grew around the Jane Furse Memorial Hospital and the Anglican and Roman Catholic mission schools, clinics and churches. Michael Furse, Anglican Bishop of Pretoria from 1909 to 1920, founded the hospital. It is named after his daughter Jane Diana Furse, who died of scarlet fever in 1918 aged 14. The area is the historical heartland of the Bapedi, and the Bapedi leader Kgoshi Mampuru II is commemorated at nearby Mamone.
